I am looking for the birth record of this ancestor. His Altenburg origin is inferred from his US Naturalization record, in which he renounces his allegiance to the Duke of Altenburg. Details of most of his descendants are known, but no one knows the names of his parents or the exact town he came from, and his death certificate, which might identify his parents, is lost.

He was a tailor, and arrived in New York City on 19 June 1849 aboard the William and Joseph, from Bremen. He married Mary Murphy and after a few years in New York City they moved to Middletown, Orange County , New York. Then in the early 1860s they settled in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. They had four children – Mary Jane, J. Charles, George F., and Anna T. The death certificates and census listings of these children usually state his birthplace as “Germany”, occasionally as “Saxony”, and in one case as “Leipzig”

The book “Map Guide to German Parish Registers – Thuringia”, by K. M. Hansen shows more than 70 parishes in Saxe-Altenburg, many with associated LDS film numbers. I’m looking for advice on whether it is possible to narrow down the choices.
