My GGrandfather was (Josef) "Arnold" HESS b.1864 in ALPNACH, Obwalden. His parents were Eugen Ignatz Hess (farmer) b.1823 in ENGELBERG, Obwalden, and Josefa EGGER b.1829. They had 9 other children: twins Johann & Maria b.1854, Christina b.1856 (who married in 1875 Josef HACKI from Engelberg), Baltasar b.1857, Anton b.1858, twins Agnes & Karolina b.1860, Adelheid b.1861, and Katharina b.1862.

He emigrated to the USA, arriving in NY on 10 Mar 1882. He was travelling in the company of his brother Anton and sister Karolina.

After several years he settled in San Mateo County, Calif, where in 1885 he married (Anna) "Regina" Eliz. VOGEL (b.1863 in SARNEN, Obwalden). Her parents were Joseph Xaver Ignatz Vogel b.1830 (Church organist in Sarnen) and Aloisa AMSTALDEN b.1826.

Arnold Hess establised a very successful building supply company in Redwood City, Calif, where he constructed many of the roads in San Mateo county in the early 1900's.
He had three children; a grandson, George A. Wallace, was world champion speedskater at the World Games held in Riga, Latvia in Feb 1940.
