My maternal great-grandmother, Mary Uehlinger (b. 1846), appears in the 1880 US census, living in St. Louis Missouri, as a widow with 4 children, the oldest of whom is my grandmother Barbara (Babet) born in 1879. Family stories always referred to g-gm Mary's hometown as Neunkirch in Schaffhausen canton.
I visited Neunkirch this summer and discovered that Uehlinger is the most common name in the town.
I cannot find any records for my great-grandfather although there is a slim chance (just a hunch) that he was Philip Uehlinger who was in the Civil War, revisited Neunkirch in 1868 and was married to Magdalena (could it be Mary Magdalena?)Wildberger. By the way, Wildberger is the second most common name in Neunkirch!
Is ther anyone who might of assistance with this search?
Thanks
