My Grandfather, John Antone Rauer, was born in Erdberg, Austria in 1871. He came to the United States, with other family members, including an uncle, Ignatz Haas, we believe, in 1887. They settled in Linn County, Missouri. I am almost certain that his birthplace was the Erdberg in Vienna's third district. Our family tradition was the city of Vienna had grown to include his village. Also, his brother Frank's death certificate states, he was born in Vienna, Austria. However, now that I am farther along in researching, I am very confused by the various towns named Erdberg. There is the town of Mistelbach, near Vienna, but not a part of the city. I discovered its original name was Erdberg. There is a town, now named Hradek in the present Czech Republic, which was originally named Erdberg, and before 1918, was in Austria. Then, I discovered there are apparently other towns named Hradek in the Czech Republic. The census for my family, through the years, give different birth places. At one time, they said they were born in German/Austria. Which, would have been during the time of Austria's alliance with Germany. So, I understand that. But, another year, they answered, or the one taking the census answered for them, that they were born in a part of Austria, that was relocated to Czechslovia. If they were born in either Erdberg in Vienna or the other Erdberg, near Vienna, then I don't know why the Czech. answer. Could someone help clear up my confusion about the towns? Vienna, it self, was never considered a part of Czechslovia, was it? Did all of these towns with the same name, so close together, exist at the same time? Thanks so much for your help. June Barron.
